“Designed for real classrooms, built for everyday use.”
The Sensory Table is a modular design developed for a primary school classroom, created to support hands-on water play within a demanding, high-use environment. The project was developed in collaboration with a teacher, ensuring the design responded directly to real classroom needs, including durability, ease of cleaning, and limited storage space.
Insights from this collaboration guided the final outcome: a robust two-piece structure that can be easily stored when not in use. Cross-braced legs provide stability during active use, while an integrated drainage system simplifies cleaning after activities. Every aspect of the design was considered to create a practical, long-lasting solution tailored to the everyday challenges of a classroom environment.

Treatment & materials
Made from locally sourced pine and 18 mm marine-grade plywood, the table is finished with six coats of glossy marine varnish for durability and easy cleaning. Rounded corners ensure child safety.
Handles and quick-release latches allow tool-free assembly, while felt pads and leg straps protect surfaces and maintain stability. Clear instructions beneath the tabletop guide safe classroom use.
Process photos captured throughout the build.

Key challenges included achieving precise angled joinery, ensuring the collapsible legs remained stable without movement or warping, and selecting materials and finishes suitable for long-term use.
